Susan Bullock, Soprano
Susan Bullock’s unique position as one of the world’s most sought-after British dramatic sopranos was recognised by the award of a CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in June 2014.
One of her most distinctive roles, Wagner’s Brünnhilde has garnered outstanding praise leading Susan Bullock to become the first ever soprano to sing four consecutive cycles of Der Ring des Nibelungen at the Royal Opera House under Sir Antonio Pappano. Appearances as Richard Strauss’ Elektra have brought her equal international acclaim and collaborations with some of the world’s leading conductors including Fabio Luisi, Semyon Bychkov, Seiji Ozawa, Sir Mark Elder and Edo de Waart.
Nicky Spence, Tenor
Dumfries born, Nicky trained at the Guildhall School and the National Opera Studio and progressed to become one of the inaugural Harewood Artists at the ENO in 2011.
On the opera stage, Nicky created the role of Brian in the world premiere of Nico Muhly's opera Two Boys at ENO, a role he reprised for his Metropolitan Opera debut in 2013.
Nicky’s most recent season included Britten Les Illuminations in Miami with Mark Wigglesworth, a return to Opéra de Paris for Andres in Berg’s Wozzeck for Opéra de Paris, Captain Pirzel in Die Soldaten for Teatro Reale, Steva Burya Jenůfa (Grange Park Opera), Tichon Kát'a Kabanová (Opera Holland Park), and Nikita in From the House of the Dead for his Royal Opera House debut.
Nicky was nominated by the International Opera Awards for Young Singer of the Year in 2015 and was also one of ten artists included in the Times Breakthrough Award at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards celebrating the best up and coming young British talent from across the Arts industry.
Audrey Hyland, Piano
Audrey studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, winning all the major awards for accompaniment and chamber music. She completed further study at the Banff Centre for the Arts in Canada, and at the Britten Pears School in Aldeburgh, where she became a staff accompanist and coach.
In 1999 Audrey joined the coaching staff at the Royal Academy of Music and enjoyed almost two decades of teaching there. She was awarded an honourary ARAM in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the opera department, and was subsequently appointed Head of RAM’s prestigious Song Circle in 2011. As a guest coach, she works for the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, Royal Opera, Samling Foundation masterclasses, Solti repetiteur course in Italy, and regularly gives masterclasses in Denmark, Seoul and Canada. She has also conducted performances of Cenerentola, Magic Flute, Così, Semele and L’Elisir for Jackdaws Music Education Trust and La Bohème for Vivo D’Arte. In September 2017 Audrey was delighted to return to the Royal College of Music, where she started her coaching career, to take up the position of Deputy Head of Vocal and Opera.
