Tally's Blood is set in Scotland and Italy during the period of World War II and its aftermath from 1936 to 1955. The action centres on the Pedreschi family, an Italian immigrant family who run a Glasgow cafe, and their interactions with the Scottish Devlin family. 'Tally's blood', as well as being a colloquial name for raspberry sauce, highlights the play's themes of family, relationships, identity and conflict. Told with heart and humour, it is a tale of poverty, passion and prejudice during tumultuous times. Prejudice – both directed towards the Italian Pedreschis when Italy joins the war, and of the family’s matriarch, Rosinella against "the Scotch" – is a central theme of the play, making it particularly relevant today.
